To comprehensively boost nurses’ practical English proficiency and international communication capability and foster a positive learning atmosphere, the first Nursing English Show themed "Empower with English, Showcase the Grace of Nightingales", sponsored by Bao'an District Bureau of Health, was successfully held at Shenzhen Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine on the afternoon of September 25. Two entries from Songgang People's Hospital stood out with outstanding performances, claiming the First Prize and Third Prize respectively, fully demonstrating the professional competence and international communication skills of our nursing staff.
Focusing on Clinical Hot Topics, Interpreting Tender Nursing Care
Taking English as the medium, the competition centered on trending clinical issues and warm nursing moments. Participating teams delivered wonderful performances covering dengue fever, chikungunya fever, weight management, appropriate TCM techniques, transitional care and other themes. Rooted in real clinical scenarios, our hospital’s entries won high recognition from judges and audiences alike with fluent English and vivid acting.
The First Prize-winning performance *Breaking the Cocoon: Continuity of Care Services for a Postoperative Rectal Cancer Patient with an Ostomy* was starred by nurses Wen An, Zhong Shuting, Chen Yaru, Wu Yumei and Li Yunian. Centered on transitional care for ostomy patients, the play delicately depicted the touching journey in which specialist nurses help patients walk out of psychological distress and regain confidence in life.
The Third Prize-winning entry *Heart Bridge: Harmony Between Doctors and Patients, Starting with Heart* featured nurses Zou Meng, Lin Guangli, Zeng Yuchao, Tang Jun and Zhou Shuwan. Taking rehabilitation education for post-myocardial infarction patients as the entry point, it vividly told a warm story of nurses resolving doctor-patient misunderstandings with professional expertise and communication skills to build a bridge of mutual trust.
Boosting Competence Through Competition, Demonstrating Responsibility by Integrating Chinese and Western Medicine
This competition served not only as a showcase integrating medical expertise and English proficiency, but also as an all-round training platform to improve nurses’ comprehensive qualities. With solid professional knowledge and fluent oral English, our contestants vividly reproduced typical nursing scenarios and humanistic care, fully reflecting the international vision and professional confidence of nurses empowered by English language skills.
These honors are a recognition of our nursing team’s professional capabilities and an encouragement to all nursing staff. Taking this competition as an opportunity, our hospital will continue to cultivate a sound atmosphere of "applying knowledge through learning and pursuing excellence through contests", further motivate nurses to learn English and polish professional skills, enrich the connotation of nursing services and enhance international communication capacity.
