1. Distant Gazing

When eyes ache and feel fatigued, stand by the window and gaze into the far distance as far as you can. Seniors in good health may head to overlook distant mountain scenery. This adjusts the eye lens and extraocular muscles, relieves visual fatigue and cuts the risk of eye disorders.

2. Ocular Massage

Wash hands thoroughly first. Rub the two palms together quickly to generate warmth, then cover the warm palms over your eyes right away to boost blood circulation around the eyes and ease tiredness. Next, slowly massage the acupoints surrounding the eyes.

Perform the massage every morning and before sleep: place the pulp of your index fingers on the hollow inner corners of the eyes, press down with moderate force and then squeeze upward. Consistent practice helps reduce risks of cataracts and presbyopia.

3. Warm Steam Therapy for Eyes

For eye soreness and strain caused by scrolling phones or watching TV:

Soak a clean towel in hot water, wring it until half-dry, and use its steam to fumigate your eyes.

Alternative methods: Brew mulberry leaves and chrysanthemums with boiling water, drink the tea two to three times a day, or fumigate eyes with hot steam from the cup. This strengthens ocular immunity; take care to prevent skin scalds.

4. Nutritious Diet

Nutrients beneficial to eyesight include lutein, vitamin A and carotene.

Lutein can be converted into zeaxanthin in the liver, an essential pigment of the macula. It blocks damage from ultraviolet and blue-violet light and delays macular degeneration.

Food sources rich in these nutrients: kiwi fruit, broccoli, pumpkin, tomatoes, carrots and corn.

5. Wear Sunglasses Outdoors

Autumn brings heavy wind-blown sand and strong ultraviolet radiation, which harm the eyes. Always wear sunglasses when going outside.

6. Timely Treatment of Eye Diseases

Eye conditions pose severe threats to vision and may even cause blindness. Common illnesses include cataracts, glaucoma, retinopathy, keratitis and macular degeneration. Never ignore any eye discomfort; cooperate fully with doctors for standardized treatment.
