Pingping is 9 years old, 125 centimeters tall but weighing 60 kilograms. Over the past two years, his height has only increased by 2.5 cm per year, while his weight has surged by 15 kg annually. Parents are deeply worried about the child’s slow height growth and expanding waistline. The root cause dates back to the summer vacation when he turned 7: he refused plain boiled water and drank only cola and other sweet drinks, finishing several cases of cola in a single holiday.
Such beverage addiction is frequently seen in pediatric clinics. Some parents even replace daily water intake with soft drinks for their kids. Yet relying on beverages to hydrate the body brings five severe drawbacks.
1. Aggravates dehydration and constant thirst
High-sugar sodas and orange juice rich in vitamins and minerals are poorly absorbed by body cells. Oxidation and breakdown of these nutrients inside the body consume extra water, leaving children even thirstier after drinking.
2. Causes either overweight or underweight in kids
- For children with average or poor appetite: Large volumes of beverages dilute gastric juice and suppress hunger. Excess sugar keeps blood glucose elevated, reducing food intake. Insufficient intake of protein, vitamins, minerals and trace elements eventually leads to emaciation.
- For children with hearty appetites: Sugary drinks deliver excessive calories, rapidly triggering childhood obesity.
3. Stunts physical growth and development
Artificial colorants and preservatives in beverages hinder children’s development. Excessive accumulated food dyes disrupt the function of metabolic enzymes, interfere with metabolism and growth, adhere to immature gastrointestinal linings and cause poor appetite and indigestion. Heavy intake of artificial colors is also linked to childhood hyperactivity disorder.
Overconsumed preservatives form complexes inside the human body, slowing the proliferation of bone cells (especially chondrocytes) and resulting in short stature.
4. Triggers various illnesses including fruit juice-induced glycosuria
Uncontrolled beverage drinking may lead to "fruit juice urine". Massive unabsorbed sugar from fruit juice is excreted through the kidneys, raising urine glucose levels. Long-term persistence of this condition may damage renal tissue and cause kidney disorders.
5. Impairs gastrointestinal digestion
Most beverages contain sodium bicarbonate, an alkaline substance. Small amounts neutralize gastric acid and aid digestion, but excessive intake alkalinizes gastric fluid, weakening digestive function and inducing indigestion and chronic digestive diseases.
Plain boiled water is the healthiest drink for children. It boosts metabolism and regulates body temperature. From a health perspective, parents should encourage children to drink boiled water as their primary source of hydration.
