Sleeping on a pillow that is too high, too low, too soft or too hard may make your neck slip off the pillow overnight, resulting in severe neck soreness and pain the next morning. Though not a serious illness, a stiff neck interferes with daily work and chores such as dressing, bending the head down and eating. Timely relief measures are needed to ease discomfort.
Methods to Alleviate Stiff Neck Pain
1. Tap the sore area with the edge of your palm
The stiff spot is usually on one side of the neck, with the corresponding arm unaffected. Straighten one palm and use the edge to gently chop and tap the painful neck muscle with moderate force. This helps reduce tension and relieve aching.
2. Apply heat compresses
Soak a hot towel and cover the stiff area for 15 to 20 minutes to reduce swelling, ease pain and activate blood circulation.
Alternative recipe: Mix ginger juice with vinegar, soak a towel in the mixture, steam it hot, then apply to the neck for 20 to 30 minutes.
Other heat options: Direct hot shower water on the neck while massaging the muscle, or blow warm air from a hair dryer onto the sore spot. All these methods soothe neck tension.
3. Knead and massage the painful spot
Massage the stiff neck yourself or ask family members for help. Press the sore area gently with fingertips to locate the most tender point. Rubbing with safflower oil or essential balm enhances the soothing effect. Pain will gradually fade after continuous kneading.
4. Switch to a suitable pillow and keep the neck warm
An ill-fitting pillow fails to relax neck muscles and joints, compressing local muscles and causing persistent tension and strain. Choose a pillow that matches your neck curve. Keep your neck away from cold wind to prevent aggravated soreness.
5. Pain-relieving topical plasters
Stick analgesic plasters such as rheumatism pain plasters or musk pain relief plasters on the stiff area, replacing them once a day. They deliver good pain relief, but stop use immediately if skin allergy occurs.
Preventive Tips
Stiff necks are closely linked to pillow quality and sleeping posture.
Pick a properly supportive pillow;
Maintain regular sleep schedules, avoid staying up late;
Do not fall asleep on desks or sofas after overwork — this posture is the top cause of stiff neck.
