Menstruation, commonly known as “period”, is a normal physiological phenomenon for women that occurs monthly. Women usually take good care of themselves during menstruation to avoid physical ailments. The volume of menstrual blood can reflect a woman’s physical condition. However, some women experience extremely light periods, with blood flow less than half the normal amount. Below are four major causes of scanty menstruation.
1. Ovulatory Dysfunction
Menstruation occurs as the body expels waste tissue monthly, which is linked to regular ovulation. After ovulation, unfertilized eggs degenerate and are discharged together with uterine lining blood to form menstrual flow.
Scanty bleeding may indicate anovulation — only minor uterine bleeding without egg release. If this persists for multiple cycles, medical examination is required to identify the underlying disorder.
2. Long-term Use of Oral Contraceptives
Birth control pills are a common contraceptive method yet cannot be used long-term without medical supervision. These medications interfere with hormonal balance. Estrogen, a core hormone sustaining female reproductive health, will be suppressed, directly leading to reduced menstrual volume.
3. Diminished Pituitary Gland Function
All reproductive endocrine activities are regulated by the pituitary gland. When its function declines, control over the ovaries weakens, triggering ovarian dysfunction and insufficient estrogen secretion. This disrupts systemic metabolism, reduces shedding of uterine waste tissue, and results in lighter periods.
4. Endocrine Disorders
Hormonal imbalance disrupts metabolism and impairs uterine endometrial development. It alters the endometrium’s growth cycle and causes pathological thinning of the lining. A thin endometrium produces far less blood during shedding, manifesting as scanty menstruation.
