Syphilis has a long disease course and can cause irreversible damage to tissues and organs in the late stage, so patients must receive active treatment. In addition, primary and secondary syphilis are highly contagious; patients in the early stage should take precautions to avoid transmitting the pathogen to others.

1. Adhere to early and sufficient medication treatment.

2. Penicillin can kill Treponema pallidum with mild side effects. If patients cooperate with doctors and complete the full course of treatment, complications can be reduced, the disease can be cured, and physical health can be restored as soon as possible. During treatment, the patient’s spouse needs to undergo screening and receive treatment if necessary. Regular follow-up examinations are required after cure, and the dosage of antibiotics shall be increased if signs of recurrence appear.

3. Pay attention to personal hygiene to prevent transmission to others.

Early syphilis patients are highly contagious. Although infectivity gradually declines in late syphilis, protective measures are still necessary. Wash personal underwear and towels separately in a timely manner and disinfect them by boiling; do not share bathing basins with others. For chancres or flat condylomata on the vulva and perianal area, decocted Chinese herbal medicines with effects of clearing heat, detoxifying, eliminating dampness and killing parasites can be used for fumigation and sitz baths.

4. Sexual intercourse is prohibited for patients with early syphilis. Those who have been ill for more than two years should avoid sexual contact as much as possible. Condoms must be used if sexual activity occurs. Unmarried patients can only get married after syphilis is completely cured.

5. Systemic reactions will occur during secondary syphilis, and bed rest is required at this time. Maintain nutritional intake during illness to boost immunity.

Pregnancy is not recommended during illness. If pregnancy occurs, treatment shall be initiated as early as possible. The decision to keep or terminate the fetus shall be made according to the pregnant woman’s own will.
