The Gastroenterology Dept is a key medical discipline of Bao'an District, with 40 inpatient beds and an annual outpatient volume exceeding 60,000 visits. It serves as the chairman unit of the Gastroenterology Branch of Bao'an Medical Association, regional center for standardized diagnosis and treatment of Helicobacter pylori, gastroenterology subgroup of National Drug Clinical Trial Institution (GCP), cooperative base of National Alliance for Early Gastrointestinal Cancer Prevention and Treatment Center, member unit of Gastrointestinal Oncology Clinical and Translational Research Cooperative Group of China (GIOC), and member unit of Microecology Medical Specialty Alliance of the Hospital Affiliated to Guangdong Pharmaceutical University (co-constructed).

Medical Team

The department has more than 40 medical and nursing staff, including 11 senior professional title holders and 8 masters.

Scope of Diagnosis and Treatment

Common, complicated and critical diseases of the digestive system:

1. Esophageal diseases: gastroesophageal reflux disease, esophagitis, benign esophageal stricture, achalasia of cardia, etc.

2. Gastroduodenal diseases: chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer, functional dyspepsia, Helicobacter pylori infection, appendicitis, gastric polyps, early gastric cancer, etc.

3. Intestinal diseases: inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis), irritable bowel syndrome, intestinal polyps, early intestinal cancer, etc.

4. Biliary and pancreatic diseases: various obstructive jaundice, choledocholithiasis, acute and chronic pancreatitis, etc.

5. Liver diseases: fatty liver, alcoholic liver disease, drug-induced liver injury, autoimmune liver disease, chronic hepatitis B/C, liver cirrhosis, liver cancer and unexplained abnormal liver function, etc.

Technology & Equipment

Equipped with high-definition electronic gastroenteroscope, magnifying endoscope, transnasal gastroscope, electronic small intestinal endoscope, duodenoscope, endoscopic ultrasound, 3D gastrointestinal motility testing system and non-invasive liver fibrosis diagnostic system.

Scientific Research & Teaching

The department undertakes one sub-project of national major research programs, presides over multiple provincial, municipal and district-level research projects, participates in multi-center clinical trials, publishes numerous SCI papers, holds a number of national patents and achieves one transformation of scientific research achievements, and has won the First Prize of Municipal Science and Technology Progress Award. It undertakes teaching for undergraduates, postgraduates and advanced training physicians, and promotes coordinated development of clinical translation and talent cultivation.

4. Endoscopic minimally invasive treatment for choledocholithiasis: minimally invasive management of biliary tract diseases via endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP);

5. Endoscopic minimally invasive treatment for internal hemorrhoids: endoscopic sclerotherapy and ligation for internal hemorrhoids;

6. Standardized diagnosis and eradication of Helicobacter pylori.
