Founded in the 1990s, the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Dept of Shenzhen Bao'an District Songgang People's Hospital has 40 inpatient beds. It is a National Demonstration Unit for TCM Services in General Hospitals, a Guangdong Provincial Characteristic TCM Specialty during the 12th Five-Year Plan Period, a District-level Characteristic TCM Specialty (Classical TCM Ward) of Bao'an District, a collaborative department of the Classical TCM Dept of Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine, and a member unit of the National Classical TCM Alliance. Adopting a TCM-led, integrated Chinese and Western medicine treatment philosophy, the department specializes in managing intractable and critical illnesses. As a comprehensive clinical TCM department integrating medical care, teaching, research, disease prevention and healthcare, it records 70,000 outpatient visits and 1,480 discharged patients annually.

The department has 31 medical and nursing staff, including 14 TCM physicians and 17 specialized TCM nurses. Among the physicians, there are 1 chief senior title holder, 5 associate senior title holders and 8 intermediate title holders, comprising 2 PhD holders and 8 masters. Four staff members are awarded Outstanding Talents and Backbone Talents of Pengcheng Qihuang Program in Shenzhen. Three inheritance studios are stationed in the department: the Classical TCM Inheritance Studio affiliated to Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine, Chen Qichang Intangible Cultural Heritage Studio of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Yu Yun Pulse Diagnosis & Acupuncture Studio.

Scope of Diagnosis and Treatment

Common, intractable and critical diseases covering internal medicine, surgery, gynecology, pediatrics, otolaryngology and dermatology.

Therapeutic Techniques & Equipment

Acupuncture therapies include small needle-knife, fire acupuncture and internal heat acupuncture; moxibustion therapies involve suspended moxibustion, fire dragon cupping and fire dragon moxibustion. Additional treatments cover acupoint catgut embedding, bloodletting therapy, acupoint application, herbal hot compress and Chinese herbal foot bath. Professional equipment such as moxibustion beds and moxibustion instruments are equipped, forming a complete system of external TCM therapies combining acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping, herbal medicine and external application.

Research & Teaching

In 2025, the department obtained 3 utility model patents, undertook 1 Bao'an District medical and health research project, and participated in formulating 1 group standard issued by Guangdong Provincial Association of Chinese Medicine. It has successfully hosted provincial continuing education programs, with specialists from Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine conducting ward rounds and lectures on a regular basis. Multiple medical staff have received further training at Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine, and many have won awards at provincial and national health science popularization competitions.

Maintain in-depth collaboration with the Classical TCM Dept of Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine to upgrade clinical and research capacity simultaneously; strengthen interdisciplinary cooperation with other clinical departments; devote efforts to health science popularization, and build a region-leading center for classical TCM treatment and management of intractable diseases.
