To improve the clinical nursing capacity of hospital nurses and ensure patient safety, in accordance with the Regulations on Nurses, the Training Guidelines for Newly Recruited Nurses (Trial) (Document No. 〔2016〕2 issued by the General Office of the National Health Commission) and the Implementation Plan for the Pilot Standardized Training of Nurses in Shenzhen (issued November 25, 2021), the Nursing Department completed basic nursing theory and practical skill assessments for newly recruited standardized training nurses on the afternoon of March 5, 2024. A total of 39 new nurses recruited in 2023 took part in the assessments.

A pre-assessment preparation meeting was held in advance. Director Chen Fang of the Nursing Department clarified the purposes and requirements of the assessments and assigned tasks to all panel members. She noted that the traditional clinical assessment model would be replaced by the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE). Standardized simulated patients and typical clinical cases were adopted, updated assessment criteria were formulated, and unified training was provided for simulated patients and invigilators.

The theoretical test adopted an online examination system based on an intelligent question bank. Screen switching was disabled in the system; any violation would trigger an automatic termination of the test and a failing grade. Before the test, the Nursing Department announced examination rules. During the test, invigilators strictly maintained exam discipline while all candidates answered questions calmly and attentively, guaranteeing a fair and impartial testing environment.

To evaluate the practical proficiency of new nurses, the skill assessment adopted OSCE case scenarios to comprehensively examine their clinical assessment and intervention capabilities, communication skills, critical thinking, humanistic care awareness and operational proficiency. Simulated patients and examiners received unified pre-training to standardize all assessment procedures. The assessment venue remained orderly with a formal atmosphere, and all examiners scored strictly in line with unified operational standards.

The assessments comprehensively evaluated the overall competence of new nurses, boosted their enthusiasm for learning, facilitated communication and cooperation among nursing staff, strengthened team cohesion, and lifted the practical capacity and service quality of the hospital’s nursing workforce.

The standardized training assessment is not an end, but a new starting point. The Nursing Department will summarize experience, continuously improve the quality of nurse standardized training, cultivate more outstanding nursing professionals, and support the high-quality development of the hospital.
