The Department of Anesthesiology at Shenzhen Bao'an People's Hospital was established in 1984 and is located on the ninth and tenth floors of the Surgical Building. The department currently has 49 staff members, including 3 chief physicians, 6 deputy chief physicians, 1 postdoctoral fellow, 2 doctors, more than 10 master's degree holders, 13 anesthetic nurses, and several assistant nurses. The current head of anesthesiology department is Professor Zhu Bin, with Deputy Directors Dr. Luo Zhiyu (chief physician) and Dr. Cai Junling (associate chief physician).
The Department of Anesthesiology is responsible for clinical anesthesia across all hospital departments, the rescue of critically ill patients, the management of acute and chronic pain, including cancer pain, as well as providing pain-free and comfortable sedation for endoscopic procedures.
The department currently has 18 operating rooms and 5 post-anesthesia recovery beds. It is equipped with advanced equipment, including 25 multi-functional anesthesia machines, more than 30 monitors (including invasive and anesthesia depth monitoring), 3 defibrillators, 2 autologous blood transfusion systems, 4 multi-functional portable ultrasound machines, 1 cerebral oxygen monitor, 2 hemodynamic monitors, 1 set of extracorporeal circulation equipment, 1 high-flow respirator, 4 electronic fiberoptic bronchoscopes, and more than 20 video laryngoscopes.
All anesthesiologists in the department have completed or are undergoing standardized anesthesia training, mastering various nerve block and general anesthesia techniques, as well as advanced perioperative monitoring technologies. They are proficient in high-difficulty procedures such as transesophageal echocardiography, arterial catheterization, central venous catheterization, visual double-lumen endotracheal intubation, and fiberoptic bronchoscopic intubation for difficult cases. Over the decades, with advances in science and technology, the scope of clinical anesthesia work has continually expanded.
The department performs over 30,000 anesthesia cases annually. The service scope includes providing anesthesia for various major surgeries, extracorporeal circulation anesthesia, hypothermic anesthesia, controlled hypotension anesthesia, and more. The age range of patients spans from infants just a few months old to centenarians. Pain clinics and wards have been established for cancer pain and chronic pain patients, utilizing advanced techniques and safe, reliable medications to alleviate pain. The department also actively provides postoperative pain management, painless abortion, painless childbirth, painless gastrointestinal endoscopy, and other analgesic services for both invasive and non-invasive procedures. Additionally, Major Ozone Autologous Blood Therapy is provided for postoperative patients and sub-healthy populations.
In addition to undertaking a large amount of clinical and research work, the department also undertakes teaching tasks for Southern Medical University, Guangdong Medical University, and other institutions, as well as several municipal and district-level research projects. The Clinical Trial Research Center of Bao'an People's Hospital (GCP institution) was established in May 2019. In February 2022, it completed the registration of medical device clinical trial institutions with the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA). In February 2024, it had completed the registration of drug clinical trial institutions with the NMPA. With the support of the hospital, the Department of Anesthesiology has passed GCP certification and is now capable of undertaking clinical trial projects for medical devices and in vitro diagnostic reagents, as well as Phase II and III new drug clinical trials, Phase IV, and post-marketing evaluation projects.
Under the leadership of the hospital's head of anesthesiology department Zhu Bin, the ‘Perioperative Echocardiography Training Course' and the ‘Greater Bay Area Perioperative Ultrasound Salon for More Accurate Diagnosis and Treatment' have become the department's ‘signature programs,' attracting scholars from across the country for academic exchanges. In 2024, the department was honored as a ‘Key Discipline of Bao'an People's Hospital' and a ‘Bao'an District Medical Key Discipline Construction Unit.' In November 2023, the Shenzhen Municipal Health Commission appointed head of anesthesiology department Zhu Bin as the Deputy Director of the Expert Committee of the Shenzhen Anesthesiology Quality Control Center. In September 2024, under the leadership of the District Health Bureau and with Shenzhen Bao'an People's Hospital as the affiliated unit, the Bao'an District Anesthesiology Medical Quality Control Center was established, with Zhu Bin, head of anesthesiology department at Shenzhen Bao'an People's Hospital, selected as the center's director.
