Rheumatic Immunology Dept

Founded in 2013, the Rheumatic Immunology Department at Shenzhen Bao’an People’s Hospital is a leading center for diagnosing and treating complex rheumatic and immune diseases. It handles over 24,000 outpatient visits and 1,500 inpatient admissions annually, specializing in conditions like systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and spondyloarthritis (SpA).The department provides personalized, evidence-based care for optimal patient outcomes.

Medical Team

The department is led by a professor, chief physician, and master’s supervisor, with two associate chief physicians and five attending physicians. All team members are graduates of top Chinese universities and have trained at leading institutions, including Peking Union Medical College, Renji Hospital, and the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University.

Academic Standing & Recognition

Since its founding, the department has played a key role in advancing rheumatology and immunology in the region, earning recognition as a key clinical specialty in Bao’an District and the hospital. Professor Guo Chengshan, a renowned rheumatology expert, established the Bao’an District Rheumatology and Immunology Committee in 2018 and serves as its chair. The department is also a member of the Chinese Rheumatology and Immunology Alliance, the National Spondyloarthritis Collaborative Center, the Vice Chairman of the Shenzhen Rheumatology Alliance, a committee member of the Rheumatology Branch of the Guangdong Medical Association and Guangdong Medical Doctor Association, and the Vice Chair of the Rheumatology Branch of the Shenzhen Medical Association and Shenzhen Medical Doctor Association.

Clinical Specialties & Treatments

The department specializes in diagnosing and treating autoimmune and rheumatic diseases, including SLE, RA, SpA, Sjögren’s syndrome (SS), idiopathic inflammatory myopathy (IIM), systemic sclerosis, antiphospholipid syndrome, vasculitis, psoriasis/psoriatic arthritis, osteoarthritis, gout, and fever of unknown origin.

Key treatments include:

  • Advanced biologic therapies for RA, SpA, SLE, immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), psoriasis, and vasculitis to improve disease control and patient outcomes.

  • Tailored steroid and immunosuppressive treatments for SLE, SS, IIM, and vasculitis to optimize efficacy and minimize side effects.

  • Intra-articular injections for RA, osteoarthritis, and gout to reduce inflammation and improve joint function.

  • Comprehensive ITP treatment combining corticosteroids, immunosuppressives, biologics, and platelet-stimulating factors to enhance outcomes.

  • Individualized treatment plans based on condition, age, and comorbidities, with multidisciplinary collaboration and regular follow-up.

Research & Education

The department has completed over 10 national, provincial, and district-level research projects, publishing over 20 SCI papers and over 10 core domestic journal articles. Faculty members actively participate in major conferences, including those by the Chinese and Guangdong Medical Associations. The department also educates graduate and undergraduate students from Shandong University, Southern Medical University, and Shenzhen University, and hosts provincial continuing education courses for medical professionals.
