The Shenzhen Baoan People's Hospital (Group) Brain Center was established in March 2016. Currently, it comprises three wards with a total capacity of 161 beds. The center encompasses three specialized sub-centers: a stroke sub-center, a tumor MDT(multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment) sub-center, and a neuroendoscopy treatment sub-center. Additionally, it incorporates four collaborative groups focusing on imaging, anesthesia, pathology, and rehabilitation.

The hospital is equipped with two Siemens 3.0T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners, a Philips 64-slice computed tomography (CT) scanner, and a Philips large flat panel 3D-DSA, among other substantial medical devices. Furthermore, it possesses advanced neurosurgical equipment, including the German ultra-high-definition endoscopic system for neurosurgery, Zeiss Pentero900 dual-fluorescence surgical microscopes, Zeiss Pentero800 surgical microscopes, Medtronic optical electromagnetic navigation systems for neurosurgical procedures, a comprehensive set of deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgical equipment, two neurosurgical ultrasonic scalpels, neurophysiological and stereotactic systems, American Medtronic and German Stryker neurosurgical power systems (totaling three units), American intracranial pressure monitors (two units), and bispectral index (BIS) monitoring systems. The hospital also comprises one specialized neuro-oncology operating room and one combined operating room.

Our Brain Center has provided medical care to over 2000 patients and more than 1300 operation annually.

The Responsibilities and Functions of the Three Wards in the Brain Center:

1. Ward I: Neurosurgery, located in the First Hospital of the Group (formerly Baoan People’s Hospital), has 4 sub-specialty groups, as follows:

① Neurotumor group: consist of a neurotumor MDT(multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment) sub-center and a neuroendoscopy treatment sub-center.

② Cerebrovascular Disease Group: Member of the National Youth Committee of the Chinese Stroke Association and the Neurosurgery Professional Committee of the Guangdong Medical Association. It was among the first in Guangdong to obtain qualifications for tertiary-level and above neurointerventional procedures and surgical doctors, making it the only qualified stroke center in western Shenzhen. It is also one of the eight training bases for endovascular interventional techniques for ischemic cerebrovascular diseases in Guangdong Province. In terms of minimally invasive interventional surgery for ischemic and hemorrhagic cerebrovascular diseases, its level ranks among the advanced in the province.

③ Functional neurosurgery: The Perry Bartlett research team of Queensland University Brain Institute have been successfully via the “Three Famous Project” of Shenzhen Medical and Health Care, and the field of functional neurosurgery will be the vigorously developed.

④ Neurocritical care group: The department has the earliest NICU established in Shenzhen, with complete equipment. For many years, it has undertaken the treatment of critically ill patients such as head injuries and stroke in Baoan District and surrounding areas, and has rich experience in treatment.

2. Ward 2: Neurology, located in the First Hospital of the Group (formerly Baoan People’s Hospital), provides standardized diagnosis and treatment for cerebrovascular diseases, infectious and immune diseases, movement disorders (Parkinsons disease), neuromuscular diseases, neurodegenerative diseases and dementia, epilepsy, neurogenetic diseases and other neurological diseases, as well as anxiety, depression, sleep disorders and other mental diseases.

3. Ward 3: It is a comprehensive ward of neurology and neurosurgery, located in the Second Hospital of the Group (formerly Shiyang Peoples Hospital).

Three sub-centers of the Brain Center:

1. Stroke sub-center: thrombolysis and thrombectomy are currently the main treatments.

2. Tumor MDT(multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment) sub-center: This sub-center relies on interdepartmental, multidisciplinary collaboration to formulate individualized perioperative treatment plans for patients. It implements standardized referral processes within each ward and, through the coordinated efforts of imaging, anesthesia, and rehabilitation collaboration groups, ensures that neuro-oncology patients receive optimal treatment.

3. Endoscopic Neurosurgery Center: The neurosurgical ward is affiliated with both the Chinese Medical Doctor Association's Endoscopy Professional Committee and the Endoscopic Neurosurgery Professional Committee. The center has conducted over one thousand endoscopic pituitary adenoma procedures, positioning it among the leading institutions in the nation. The facility employs minimally invasive endoscopic techniques for the treatment of prevalent conditions such as cerebral hemorrhage and systematically conducts endoscopic neurosurgery training sessions to enhance the comprehensive endoscopic proficiency of its medical personnel.

Extensive neurosurgical and endoscopic surgery:

The Brain Center currently performs microsurgical resection of supratentorial tumors, endoscopic transnasal transsphenoidal pituitary tumor resection, resection of large meningiomas, cerebellar tumor resection, malignant glioma resection, clipping of cerebral aneurysms and removal of arteriovenous malformations, endovascular treatment for cerebrovascular diseases, as well as numerous surgeries for head injuries and intracerebral hemorrhages. It extensively conducts micro-neurosurgical procedures and neuroendoscopic surgery. Currently, the volume of neuroendoscopic and interventional surgeries ranks among the top in Shenzhen, marking a significant step forward in advancing surgical treatments for complex neurological conditions.

The brain center has 10 distinguished professors:

The hospital has hired Professor Zhang Yazhuo, Director of the Beijing Institute of Neurosurgery at Beijing Tiantan Hospital; Professor Zhang Jianguo, Chief of Functional Neurosurgery at Beijing Tiantan Hospital; Professor Chen Mingzhen, former Chief of Neurosurgery at the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University; Professor Li Tielin from Zhujiang Hospital, a pioneer in Chinese neurointerventional surgery and a renowned expert in cerebrovascular diseases; Professor Mou Yonggao from Sun Yat-sen Universitys Cancer Hospital; Professors Ke Yiquan and Tian Shiyu from Zhujiang Hospital affiliated with Southern Medical University; Professor Zhang Suming from Tongji Hospital of Huazhong University of Science and Technology; Professor Zeng Jinsheng from the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University; and Professor Pan Suyue from Nanfang Hospital of Southern Medical University. They regularly visit the hospital for ward rounds, case discussions, and surgical guidance, helping to rapidly develop the department, nurture talent, and dispatch 90% of neurosurgeons to work or further their studies at well-known hospitals in China and abroad, including the UK and Germany. The center also boasts a high-level nursing team that is dedicated to their profession and has been honored multiple times as an outstanding nursing team. Additionally, the center offers training programs for residents, general practitioners, undergraduate students, and graduate students.
