Pediatric Healthcare Dept is a National Pilot Unit for Scientific Parenting, Guangdong Provincial Demonstration Base for Early Childhood Development, and Bao’an District Guidance Center for Scientific Parenting. It comprises four subspecialties: Child Population Healthcare Section, Pediatric Growth & Development Section, Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics (including High-risk Infant Management, Child Mental Health, Pediatric Rehabilitation), and Early Childhood Development Section.

It provides a series of specialized clinics including Growth & Development Clinic, Full-month Health Checkup Clinic, Kindergarten Admission Checkup Clinic, Child Nutrition Clinic, Premature Infant Care Clinic, High-risk Infant Follow-up Clinic, Child Mental Health Clinic, Child & Adolescent Psychological Counseling Clinic, Pediatric Rehabilitation Clinic (including TCM Rehabilitation), and Congenital Heart Disease Screening Clinic. The department has 64 rehabilitation beds, including 36 inpatient beds and 28 day rehabilitation beds, with an annual outpatient volume of over 150,000 and annual inpatient discharges of about 1,300.

Academic Leaders

Ma Liya, academic leader, obtained her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, doctoral degree from Southern Medical University, and studied in Japan and the United States for one year respectively. Dr.Ma is a master supervisor, specializing in follow-up and early intervention for various high-risk infants including premature infants, neurodevelopmental assessment, infant growth and nutrition assessment and guidance, and provides consultations at the Premature Infant Care Clinic.

Feng Chengyun, Chief of Early Childhood Development Section, obtained her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Guiyang Medical College, specializing in early childhood development promotion, scientific parenting guidance, parent-child reading, etc.

Tian Xianyu, Chief of Pediatric Growth & Development Section, obtained her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Guizhou Medical University, specializing in child growth & development assessment, nutrition management, diagnosis and treatment of nutritional diseases, scientific parenting guidance, etc., and provides consultations at the Growth & Development Clinic.

Peng Qiongling, Chief of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics, obtained her master’s degree from Huazhong University of Science and Technology and doctoral degree from Southern Medical University, specializing in high-risk infant management, child neurodevelopmental assessment and comprehensive intervention, diagnosis and counseling of congenital and genetic diseases, and provides consultations at the Pediatric Rehabilitation Clinic.

Personnel

The department currently has 100 professional staff including physicians, nurses, rehabilitation therapists, psychotherapists, music therapists and teachers, among which 71 in Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics, 12 in Pediatric Growth & Development Section, 8 in Child Population Healthcare Section, 9 in Early Childhood Development Section. There are 31 physicians including 8 public health physicians and 23 clinicians, 31 therapists, 2 psychotherapists, 7 preschool teachers, 29 nurses. Among the physicians, 4 have doctoral degrees, 15 have master’s degrees, 12 have bachelor’s degrees; 4 with senior professional titles, 4 with associate senior titles, 9 with intermediate titles.

In the past three years, the department has published 7 SCI papers and more than 20 core journal papers, and undertaken 17 research projects including 1 project of the National Natural Science Foundation of China.

Equipment

The department is equipped with child growth, neurodevelopment, nutrition monitoring tools and diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation equipment, including: Internet-based follow-up software for high-risk infants/premature infants, child growth & development follow-up software, bone age analysis software, various psychological and behavioral development screening and assessment software, motor development assessment software (GMs, Peabody, Alberta, gross motor assessment, etc.), language development screening and assessment software, body composition analyzer, bone densitometer, hearing screening and diagnostic instrument, visual evoked potential instrument, vision screener, transcutaneous jaundice meter, bionic brain electrical stimulator, suspension intensive training system, visual music therapy instrument, biofeedback therapy instrument, repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation instrument and other various pediatric rehabilitation therapy and scientific parenting teaching equipment.

Services

The department provides services for children of all ages: child growth & development, nutrition and feeding assessment and guidance (by appointment at Growth & Development Clinic), early development series parent-child classes (Early Childhood Development Section), high-risk infant follow-up and guidance, group and individual classes for high-risk infant early intervention (by appointment at High-risk Infant Follow-up Clinic and Premature Infant Care Clinic), diagnosis and treatment of child psychological and behavioral diseases (by appointment at Child Mental Health Clinic), adolescent psychological counseling and intervention (by appointment at Child & Adolescent Psychological Counseling Clinic), pediatric rehabilitation (by appointment at Pediatric Rehabilitation Clinic), etc.

It provides early development guidance for healthy and high-risk children to promote their potential and all-round development. For children with developmental deviation and abnormalities such as motor disorders, language disorders, feeding/swallowing disorders, brain injury syndrome, autism spectrum disorder, global developmental delay, etc., it provides rehabilitation therapies including physical therapy, occupational therapy, sensory integration training, perception training, psychological guidance, speech therapy, oral motor training, music therapy, sandplay therapy, physical factor therapy to reduce and avoid disabilities and improve quality of life.

Service Innovation

The department actively innovates service models and improves medical experience. For example, the High-risk Infant Management subspecialty has established an information platform connecting “high-risk infant parents’ mobile terminal – medical workstation – physicians’ mobile terminal”, and adopts a new Internet-based high-risk infant follow-up model to optimize the workflow of Premature Infant/High-risk Infant Follow-up Clinic. The Pediatric Rehabilitation subspecialty carries out day rehabilitation inpatient mode and Internet-based management.

Public Health Services

The department undertakes the management and implementation of public health child healthcare programs in the district, providing free or preferential services for newborns and children in Bao’an District, including: newborn hearing screening, inherited metabolic disease screening, congenital heart disease screening, hip joint screening, high-risk infant management, early intervention for high-risk premature infants, screening and intervention for child psychological and behavioral problems, early childhood development and scientific parenting guidance, special assistance for critically ill children, early rehabilitation assistance for neurodevelopmental disorders, special action to reduce anemia prevalence.
