The Clinical Laboratory Department of Shenzhen Bao'an Women's and Children's Hospital is a comprehensive clinical laboratory integrating clinical laboratory testing, teaching and scientific research.
The department has 42 professional and technical staff, including 3 doctors, 6 masters, 10 associate senior professionals and 19 intermediate professionals. It undertakes the testing of clinical laboratory specimens from all departments of the hospital, adopts a 24-hour duty system with non-stop testing on holidays, and completes more than 10 million test items annually.
In addition, it is responsible for pathogenic microorganism detection of air, object surfaces, sterilized supplies, medical staff’s hands and disinfectant solution across the hospital, as well as COVID-19 nucleic acid testing for hospital environmental samples and imported articles. Furthermore, the department undertakes free public welfare testing programs in Bao’an District, including pre-marital examination, prenatal testing, kindergarten and student physical examinations, and national sentinel surveillance and prevention of syphilis, hepatitis B and AIDS.

Dr.Wang serves as Director of the Chongqing Biochemical Society and Young Committee Member of the Laboratory Physician Branch of Chongqing Medical Doctor Association. Wang Feng has presided over 1 National Natural Science Foundation project, 2 provincial and ministerial research projects, and co-presided over 1 major basic research project in Shenzhen. Wang Feng has published more than 40 academic papers including 10 SCI papers, and served as associate editor of 2 monographs. Wang Fenghas won the Second Prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award once and the First Prize of Preventive Medicine Science and Technology Progress Award of China once.
Clinically, Wang Feng has been in charge of the Biochemistry, Immunology, Microbiology and other professional teams for 8 years. Wang Feng has managed the Outpatient and Emergency Laboratory Team for 6 years, covering venous blood collection for outpatient and emergency patients, liver and renal function biochemical tests, tumor markers, hormone levels, thyroid function, coagulation function, routine blood and body fluid examinations.
I. Service Items
The Clinical Laboratory consists of seven professional groups: Clinical Chemistry, Clinical Immunology, Clinical Hematology, Clinical Urinalysis & Body Fluid Testing, Clinical Microbiology, Clinical Blood Transfusion, Molecular Detection and Specimen Processing Unit, covering a total area of about 1,700 square meters.
Equipped with instruments worth nearly 50 million RMB, including Beckman Power Express fully automatic biochemistry production line, SYSMEX XN900 hematology analysis pipeline, urine testing pipeline, French STA-R Max automatic coagulation analyzer, the first fully automatic microbiology laboratory pipeline system in Shenzhen, URANUS AE 375 fully automatic ELISA analyzer (the largest of its kind nationwide), and HCMSAuto intelligent automatic blood collection pipeline. It provides accurate and timely laboratory reports for clinical practice.
At present, the department carries out more than 300 testing items with complete service coverage, delivering rapid and accurate services for clinical practice and medical scientific research, with an annual testing volume of over 10 million tests.
The department implements internal quality control for all testing items and participates in national and provincial external quality assessment organized by the National Health Commission and Guangdong Province each year. The assessment items include routine chemistry, blood gas and acid-base analysis, endocrine indicators, tumor markers, special proteins, glycated hemoglobin A1c, whole blood trace elements, complete blood cell count, coagulation tests, dry chemical urine analysis, blood cell morphology examination, urinary sediment morphology examination, parasite morphology examination, blood grouping, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, eugenics immunological testing, lipid analysis, clinical microbiology, serological markers of infectious diseases, COVID-19 nucleic acid testing, etc. The PT performance has remained above 95% in the past five years.
II. Quality Assurance
To comprehensively improve laboratory testing quality and service level and ensure the impartiality, scientificity and accuracy of test reports, the Clinical Laboratory has formulated a quality manual, procedural documents and standard operating procedures in accordance with ISO 15189 Medical Laboratories — Particular Requirements for Quality and Competence combined with actual departmental conditions. All staff follow the quality manual in daily work for continuous improvement and optimization.
The quality management system covers personnel, equipment, premises, environmental facilities and testing items of all laboratory divisions.
In December 2018, the department officially passed the on-site assessment of the National Accreditation Service for Conformity Assessment, becoming the fourth ISO 15189-accredited medical laboratory in Shenzhen and the first in Bao’an District. It successfully passed the ISO 15189 re-assessment in March 2021.
III. Scientific Research and Teaching
While advancing clinical service development, the department continuously strengthens scientific research capacity. In recent years, it has undertaken dozens of medical research projects at national, provincial, municipal and district levels, published more than 80 academic papers in domestic medical journals, and presented 2 to 5 papers at domestic and international academic conferences every year.
