Shenzhen Bao'an Women's and Children's Hospital is designated as a National Antimicrobial Clinical Application Monitoring Hospital and National Rational Drug Use Monitoring Hospital by the former Ministry of Health, a Guangdong Provincial Base for Comprehensive Clinical Drug Evaluation, and the chair unit of the Intravenous Therapy Committee under Shenzhen Pharmaceutical Association.
The Department of Pharmacy integrates medical services, teaching and scientific research. It is a workstation of the China Pharmaceutical Safety Cooperation Alliance (Yaodun Public Welfare), awarded the honor of Guangdong Provincial Women’s Civilization Post, and serves as the Intravenous Pharmacist Training Base of Guangdong Pharmaceutical Association.
The department consists of seven divisions: Outpatient & Emergency Pharmacy, Traditional Chinese Medicine Pharmacy, Inpatient Pharmacy, Pharmacy Intravenous Admixture Service (PIVAS), Clinical Pharmacy Office, Drug Warehouse, and Procurement & Information Group. It has 57 staff members, including 47 pharmaceutical professionals: 2 doctoral degree holders, 6 master’s degree holders, 5 senior professional title holders and 19 intermediate professional title holders.
In recent years, the department has achieved remarkable progress in pharmaceutical administration, pharmaceutical informatization, antimicrobial stewardship and adverse drug reaction monitoring. It has actively explored modern information-based pharmaceutical management models to rapidly improve overall management quality.
A smart pharmacy has been built to realize online prescription/medical order review by the system, automatic drug dispensing, unit-dose packaging, robot-based fixed-point drug delivery for outpatient infusion and inpatient wards. The whole process of drug procurement, inventory management, storage, dispensing and application is fully traceable. Refined drug management enables seamless connection between the prescription system and pharmacy dispensing system, shortening waiting time and improving patient experience.
A rational drug use monitoring platform has been established to monitor hospital-wide medication in real time, automatically analyze medication information throughout the medical treatment process, and intercept irrational medication behaviors instantly. Combined with mobile internet technology, the official WeChat account pushes prescription details, dosage, administration instructions and precautions to guide standardized medication for patients.
Pharmacy dispensing divisions include Outpatient Pharmacy, Emergency Pharmacy, Inpatient Pharmacy and TCM Pharmacy, undertaking prescription review, drug dispensing, drug distribution, medication guidance, pharmaceutical consultation and prescription evaluation. The Outpatient Pharmacy is equipped with German ROWA automatic dispensing machine, while the Inpatient Pharmacy is fitted with unit-dose packaging machines, controlled drug management cabinets and automatic injection dispensing equipment, providing solid hardware support for high-efficiency and high-quality dispensing.
PIVAS is the first officially operational intravenous admixture center in Bao’an District, handling hazardous drugs, parenteral nutrition solutions, antimicrobial agents and general medications. In 2021, it prepared 330,000 groups of intravenous formulations. From medical order receipt to clinical administration, the whole workflow includes 8 standard procedures with 11 rounds of double checking to ensure medication safety.
As one of the first institutions in Shenzhen certified by Guangdong Pharmaceutical Association and the only maternal and child specialized training base for intravenous pharmacists in Guangdong Province, PIVAS has cultivated a large number of backbones for centralized intravenous admixture for hospitals across the province.
Clinical pharmacists are stationed in Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Neonatology, Gynecology, Breast and Thyroid Surgery and other departments, forming multidisciplinary treatment teams with medical and nursing staff. Their responsibilities include clinical ward rounds, individualized treatment regimen formulation, pharmaceutical rounds, medication monitoring, medical order review, pharmaceutical consultation, patient education, pharmaceutical consultation meetings and professional training, providing standardized pharmaceutical services for medical staff and patients.
The department attaches great importance to scientific research, teaching and discipline development. In the past five years, it has undertaken 21 research projects (1 national, 2 provincial and ministerial), published 50 academic papers including 21 SCI articles and 20 Chinese core journal papers, and obtained 10 authorized patents. Team members have delivered nearly 50 academic lectures at provincial and municipal conferences. The department has won more than 60 honorary titles at national, provincial and municipal levels, and its staff hold over 70 academic appointments above the municipal level.

Dr.Fan research focuses on pharmacogenomics, population pharmacokinetics and the mechanism of drug-induced diseases. Fan Xiaomei has presided over 5 projects including the National Natural Science Foundation of China and Guangdong Natural Science Foundation, published more than 21 SCI papers (highest IF: 14.903), and obtained 3 invention patents. Dr.Fan research achievements won the First Prize of 2019 Science and Technology Achievement Award of Guangdong Pharmacological Society and the Special Honor Award of the 1st Pharmaceutical Science and Technology Achievement Award in 2021.
