Established in July 2010, the Central Lab is designated as the Shenzhen Key Laboratory for Birth Defect Research and is one of the first supporting departments of Shenzhen's Three Talents Project. It currently serves as the chair unit of the Medical Microecology Special Committee under Shenzhen Medical Association, and previously acted as the supporting chair unit of the Microecology Special Committee under Shenzhen Preventive Medicine Association.

The laboratory has a total of 16 staff members, including 1 recipient of the Shenzhen Municipal Government Special Allowance, 3 overseas returned scholars, 3 PhD holders, 1 Shenzhen High-level Local Leading Talent, and 2 Category C Shenzhen Overseas High-level Talents. There is 1 senior professional title holder (Researcher, Chief Technician) and 6 associate senior title holders (1 Associate Researcher and 5 Deputy Chief Technicians). The laboratory has 1 doctoral supervisor (Jinan University) and 2 master’s supervisors (Jinan University, Sun Yat-sen University). It has undertaken 4 projects supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (Emergency Management Program and Youth Fund), 3 Guangdong provincial research projects, 2 Guangdong Provincial Health Research Fund projects, and 6 Shenzhen Municipal Science and Technology Program projects.

Undertaking the functions of the Prenatal Diagnosis Laboratory and Molecular Biology Laboratory, it is the 4th prenatal diagnosis laboratory in Shenzhen and the only one in Bao’an District. The laboratory provides array Comparative Genomic Hybridization (aCGH) for prenatal villi, aborted villi and peripheral blood; chromosome culture and karyotype analysis for prenatal villi, aborted villi and umbilical cord blood; molecular diagnosis of infectious diseases; Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT); Sanger sequencing and next-generation sequencing (NGS). National or provincial continuing medical education programs are held annually.

Xiong Likuan, Chief Technician, Researcher, Doctoral Supervisor, recipient of the Shenzhen Municipal Government Special Allowance, and Shenzhen High-level Local Leading Talent.

Dr.Xiong serves as review expert for the National Science and Technology Innovation Fund, Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Consulting Expert Pool, Guangdong Provincial Emergency Management Expert Committee, as well as science and technology evaluation expert for Hebei, Jiangsu, Sichuan and Shenzhen.

Dr.Xiong was a Senior Visiting Scholar at the University of Sydney, Australia, from November 2004 to April 2006, and was awarded one of the First Top Ten Scientific Research and Teaching Workers by the Health Work Committee of CPC Shenzhen Municipal Committee.

Dr.Xiong once served as editorial board member of the 2nd Chinese Journal of Cells and Stem Cells, and the 3rd & 4th Journal of Clinical Pulmonology. He is a peer reviewer for Chinese Medical Journal, Chinese Journal of Laboratory Medicine, Chinese Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Chinese Journal of Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases, Journal of Medical Research and other core journals.

Xiong Likuan has won science and technology awards at all levels for 11 times (9 times as the principal investigator), including 9 awards of the Second and Third Prize of Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award or Shenzhen Municipal Science and Technology Innovation & Progress Award (7 times as principal investigator). Xiong Likuan has presided over or participated in more than 30 national, provincial and municipal scientific research projects. Xiong Likuan has independently authored 1 monograph (China Science and Technology Press, 1992) and edited 1 monograph (People’s Medical Publishing House, 2003), and participated in compiling 2 industry operation specifications (1995, 2006). Xiong Likuan has published over 180 academic papers, among which more than 100 editorials, reviews and original articles were published as the first or corresponding author in domestic and international journals.

Development Planning

Taking discipline construction and talent training as the foundation, integrating clinical practice closely with scientific research, focusing on maternal and child health prevention and clinical services, the laboratory carries out research in genetics, molecular biology, molecular microbiology, immunology and biochemistry, develops new projects and new technologies, and establishes innovative research methodologies.
